Every fall the same thing happens across Allegan County. The boats come off Gun Lake, Otsego Lake, and the Kalamazoo River, and owners remember they have nowhere to put them. The driveway is too small, the HOA sends letters, and the garage was never going to fit a pontoon. If that sounds familiar, this guide covers when to store, how to prep, and how to lock in a paved, fenced space at Plainwell Self Storage before the fall rush fills them.

When Michigan Boaters Put Their Boats Away

Most boats in our area come out of the water between mid September and late October. The first hard frost usually lands in early October, and marinas around Gun Lake and Otsego Lake book their haul-out schedules weeks ahead. Waiting until the water turns cold means competing with every other boat owner in the area for storage at the same time.

RV season runs a little longer. Most owners take a last color tour trip in early October, then park the rig for the winter by Halloween.

Reserve Your Space Before the September Rush

Vehicle storage fills in a predictable order every year: the biggest spaces go first. If you have a 30 foot camper or a pontoon on a trailer, August is the right time to reserve, not October. Our vehicle, RV, and boat parking is paved, sits inside a fenced perimeter with secure 24/7 keypad gate access, and handles vehicles up to 38 feet. Month to month, no long term contract, so you can store through the winter and leave in the spring.

How to Prep a Boat for Fall Storage

A few hours of prep in the fall saves real money in the spring. Before you park it:

  • Run fuel stabilizer through the engine, then top off the tank to limit condensation
  • Drain and winterize the engine and water systems before the first hard freeze
  • Pull the battery, charge it, and store it somewhere warm
  • Clean the hull and interior so nothing molds under the cover
  • Cover it with a fitted or shrink wrap cover that can shed snow
  • Remove electronics, lines, and anything worth stealing

How to Prep an RV or Travel Trailer

  • Drain the fresh, gray, and black tanks completely
  • Blow out or antifreeze the water lines. A cracked line is the most common spring repair bill
  • Empty the fridge and prop the doors open
  • Pull food and anything mice would want. Steel wool in openings helps
  • Top off the fuel and add stabilizer if it is a motorhome
  • Check tire pressure and consider tire covers for UV protection

Not sure whether your gear should ride out the winter in the rig or in a storage unit? Our size guide shows what fits in each unit size if you want to pull valuables into an enclosed unit while the vehicle is parked.

Why Paved, Fenced Storage Beats the Driveway

Grass and gravel lots hold moisture under your hull and frame all winter. Paved storage drains, which matters in a West Michigan winter that swings between thaw and freeze from November through March. A fenced perimeter with gated access also means the boat is not sitting in open view on a side yard for five months. And if your neighborhood or HOA restricts parked trailers, a storage space ends that conversation for good.

We get renters from Plainwell, Otsego, Allegan, Martin, Cooper, Wayland, and the lake communities along the M-89 and US-131 corridor. If you are closer to Otsego or Allegan, we are a short drive up M-89.
